SafeGuards are people trained to support safety and awareness in social spaces.
Support that is present before situations escalate.
Not every uncomfortable situation is visible.
Not every guest feels able to speak up.
SafeGuards help close this gap by being attentive, approachable, and human.
Their presence supports early awareness and calm responses, helping create environments where guests feel supported and situations can be addressed before they escalate.
SafeGuards help recognize early signs of discomfort and respond calmly when situations feel unclear or tense.
They support respectful communication, stay present when guests need reassurance, and involve the appropriate venue team members when needed. They may:
• notice early signs of discomfort or boundary concerns
• respond early through calm and respectful communication
• stay with guests who need support
• involve the venue team or activate SafeSpace tools when appropriate
They act with clarity, care, and responsibility to help maintain a supportive environment for everyone involved.
SafeGuards support awareness and calm responses, but they are not responsible for enforcement or security decisions.
They do not:
• replace venue staff or professional security
• enforce rules or control people’s behavior
• intervene physically in situations
• replace emergency or medical services
Their role is to support early awareness and responsible responses — not enforcement.
SafeGuards are not booked individually by venues.
They are part of the SafeLocation certification process, ensuring clear roles, shared expectations, and consistent safety standards within the venue team. This structured approach helps prevent misunderstandings and supports both guests and staff in responding to situations calmly and responsibly.
In some venues, SafeGuards support Safeword systems that allow guests to signal discreetly when they need help. Safewords make it possible to request support without drawing attention or escalating the situation.
SafeGuards help ensure these signals are recognized and handled calmly, respectfully, and appropriately.
SafeGuards work as part of a connected safety structure alongside venue teams, SafeLocation standards, and our.safespace digital tools. Together, they support shared awareness and responsible responses, helping create environments where guests feel more confident and supported.
No. SafeGuards are trained members of the venue team. They become part of the SafeLocation structure through certification and the SafeGuard Workshop.
Whether you’re a venue interested in becoming a SafeSpace location or want to learn how we help create safer environments for guests — we’re happy to help.
Our.safespace and SafeGuards do not replace law enforcement, medical services, or professional security.
If there is immediate danger, emergency services must always be contacted.
